The Freedom to Fly

by: April D. Byrd

Revisiting an old post I wrote for the Black Convo Magazine I was inspired to write a poem. The Piece was called "A Will To Fly"  and it's from the perspective of the black experience, but the article was written to motivate everyone from all races and nationalities.

The concept is to wake up, to live in consciousness, not carelessness no matter what odds are stacked against us. Because our dreams and aspirations don't sit at bed-level we must arise and take initiative to meet them.

Even if we don't always use it right, America's strongest point is definitely freedom.  I can't help but imagine that the pilgrims knew "why the caged bird sings". The Poem I wrote is named "FREEDOM",  here it is:

I'm waking up to live my dreams,
dreaming big will give me wings,
Freedom to move, freedom to choose
to know why the caged bird sings.

with no more mediocre strings.
I'm attached to reality
ready to defy gravity
If that is what the case may be.

Maybe, never saved me
and none a dream ever redeemed...
the price was a life, one life
and every ONE is free.

freedom isn't cheap, but sleep is
waking up 'cause my goal is only as far as my reach is
consciousness, life and justice
were given to me,

so...I'm waking up to live my dreams.

Falling Upward

By Jennifer Osbourne

All great men and women have failed there way to success! It is time to let go of the false stigma of failure, that says you fail because you are not good enough. In reality only those who dare to try, pursue their dreams, and take action have the glorious honor of failing.

All great lessons and transformative change only takes place after real failure! For those of us that want to impact the world, leave a legacy, and dare to tread the lonely path of greatness; failure must become our kin folk and teacher.

Have a great day! ...and dare to fail your way to success.

Build What Matters First...Then Go Hard!

What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet lose his soul. --Mark 8:36

For all the success mongers and big dreamers we know we want the world. We wanna live it up! So we should. However, the grounding of our spirit is the only thing that matters in the end when everything else and everybody else goes away. What will we be left with besides our soul? So, if we really wanna build something up it should be our soul.

Life is good and we can't have a beneficial, complete one if our soul standing isn't really right. Peace of mind is everything. To have that we should feed our soul. Our hearts should have confidence and trust in the word of God first, because all the issues of life come out of it.

If you got all the riches in the world, but it comes with a headache and a heartache then something is seriously wrong! The bible says "The blessing (empowerment) of the Lord maketh rich and adds no sorrow. --Proverbs 10:22  The people that don't have the material wealth need to get their minds right so when they get it they don't go crazy, but use it accordingly and the people that do have it need to stop placing such a heavy dependence on it. The spirit of God is the only medium of balance in between.  Wholeness is in God. So, where can you go, what are you gonna do about it?

It's great to be a go-getter, but what's the point of having everything with no soul to enjoy it. It's like having a huge feast set before you, but  having no taste buds. Really! Living outside of the purpose for wealth and empowerment takes the flavor out of life. Add some spice by empowering your spirit first. When you first win on the inside, the outside can't help but line up.

Fasting Gone Fabulous?

“But this kind does not go out except by fasting and by prayer.” (Matthew 17:21)

If you read the Bible you know the intrinsic value of fasting. Religiously it can be used to build a better focus throughout prayer. As Christians we sometimes turn to it. We know the benefits of it, only when we use it accordingly, but some celebrities are using fasting for a different purpose.

The Daniel Fast (21 days) only vegetables is good for cleansing, but is unconditional fasting useful for healthy weight loss? According to Chaka Khan it is. It's part of the reason why she looked so good at the American Idol Finale.

Clutch magazine shares some reasons why it might not be so good, and it's best to stick with exercise, good eating habits and the like. Would you ever fast to lose weight? Why or why not?

Family Ties

I just came back from the family reunion in Douglas, GA. I had a good time and I got frustrated a couple of times. It always seems like everything comes with it's good and it's bad elements. We all are ultimately tied to God, so as they say "it's all good!" Knowing that God always has our best interest at heart makes everything we do worth doing. I had fun with the family, meeting new family, and I tried to stay as busy as possible.

The thing about life is we don't learn or will never know what's going on, until we engage. Engaging life and living an active one, cooperating with God and people gives us the ammunition we need to do great things. Coming off all the drama of the weekend and reflecting on the time I had, when I got home one scripture came to mind clearly:

And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. (Galatians 6:9)
Even though it's Monday, the beginning of the week and it's easy to drag coming off the excitement of the week-end. we should keep going hard, stay strong and be motivated. You only got one life to live, give it all you got, with the people you love. With God on your side you can't go wrong!

Be blessed, give life, think BOLD

Have a Great Monday!

Christian Fiction

I am so happy to see more Christian film and media genres having major success. Tyler Perry is doing his thing in Hollywood and I am loving all things Sherwood Pictures. I know that I'm super late but, last night I finally watched the movie "Fireproof" that everybody was raving about.

If you have not seen it, you should! "Courageous" is a great movie too, but I especially loved "Fireproof" because it dealt with love and had great depth, as well as meaning. All of them are good movies that show why it's excellent to be empowered by God's love. And they show the raw issues of life, not a lot of pretense.

These movies had me laughing and crying, and inspired me to keep going on the journey. Today's is Friday! That's usually date night or movie night for some people. "Fireproof" is currently on Netflix, so maybe you can chill with loved ones and watch.  They are definitely family friendly!

Be Blessed and Have a Great Weekend!
