For Colored Girls, Miley Cyrus, and The Rest Of Us

Your Destiny Will Compensate You For Your Pain. ~ Max Lucado [Tweet This]

Life is a journey, not a destination, so of course we’re all subject to a wrong turn…or two, or at least however many it takes us to get on the right track. “Child star gone wrong” seems to be a new Disney theme song for most of the kids from the Hollywood hood. Some of them cleaned up their act, but stars like Amanda Bynes, Demi Levato, and Lindsey Lohan were all beating down a familiar path of adolescent madness, and making headlines for being a hot mess. Miley Cyrus is taking good care not to be an exception.
She’s the latest trending topic online for being considered a train wreck in action. She’s built a new league of haters and speculators all onboard for the ride, it seems like everybody hates on Miley now. Yes, her two little teddy bear ears at the VMA’s just made her look like the devil, but maybe she’s not. We can only hope it’s just a phase. She is just 20 years old after all…but then again most 20-year-olds don’t carry around teddy bears.
mileycyrusvmatwerk
Bear-y, bear-y strange behavior!
Is Miley acting out because of a “lost childhood”? Was the weight of juggling two lives really too much for Hannah Miley? If that’s the case then forget the haters, that balancing act was quite entertaining! She’s put in her work; she knows the struggle is real. Let the girl turn up, be ratchet, and “twerk” out her issues with the homies. Miley knows how to put on a show and all the media is buzzing, but what about the real “hood” girls whose stories go unsung, struggling to make the rent, on food stamps, and just surviving, with no “Mr. Deeds” to help them out and no President Fitz to bail them out.
Yes, she probably has issues, but until Miley gets a “Kink in her hair” the struggle of balancing fame and normality is weak in comparison to the depth of most black girl problems. However, no one can ever really ever know the pain that Miley or anyone else goes through. Tragedy is not limited to colored girls who have considered suicide. Everybody has issues. We all have our own journey and a personal “climb” we must endure. Our journey teaches us the lessons we’re meant to grow from.

Kirk Cameron Movie 'Unstoppable' Doing Good in Theatres

Kirk Cameron's latest independently financed faith-based film,Unstoppable -- which ran on 700 screens Tuesday as part of a one-night live event -- has grossed over $2 million from approximately 150,000 ticket sales, according to Rentrak. By comparison, the Hugh Jackman-Jake Gyllenhaaldrama Prisoners pulled in $2.2 million on 3,260 screens in the same time frame.
That makes Unstoppable the most successful event in the history of NCM Fathom Events, the Colorado-based entertainment company founded in 2002 that broadcasts live simulcasts of everything from Metropolitan Opera performances to Rolling Stones concerts to big-name boxing matches in movie theaters around the country.
"We were hoping for good numbers but weren't expecting this to be quite so exciting," Cameron tells The Hollywood Reporter. "This is great."
Says Dan Diamond, senior vice president of Fathom, "We're thrilled with what we've seen with Unstoppable. It's actually the second event we've done with Kirk. We've done several events with Glenn Beck, and one with Bill O'Reilly. We try to present something for everyone."
By comparison, the recent Floyd Mayweather - Canelo Alvarez bout sold 75,000 simulcast tickets for Fathom, and some Met operas, like a recent broadcast of Carmen, grossed close to $2 million but at a higher price point. (Cameron charges $12.50 per ticket, the Met charges $22.) Cameron's last experiment with the format -- his 2012 documentary Monumental: In Search of America's National Treasure -- was a strong performer as well, grossing $1.23 million from over 100,000 attendees.
Billed as a "live event" rather than just a movie, Tuesday's screening also included a satellite linkup to Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., where Cameron presented the film before a sold-out audience of 10,000, introduced several musical performances and moderated a question-and-answer session with invited guests.
Calling it his "most personal" project to date, Unstoppable features the divisive Growing Pains star -- whose career path has led him away from mainstream Hollywood and towards evangelical projects -- examining issues of faith in the face of tragedy. The film, which was inspired by the death of a teenaged friend, will screen again on theaters nationwide on Thurs., Oct. 3.
Cameron's 2008 film Fireproof, produced by Sherwood Pictures, was a surprise hit at the box office, made for just $500,000 but grossing $34 million. Cameron tells THR he took no fee for the performance and earned no share of the profits.
The actor is currently at work on a scripted feature about a Little League Baseball team produced by his Los Angeles-based CamFam Studios.

UPCOMING DOCUMENTARY: TRAPPED BY MY OWN TEARS

On Wednesday April 10th  at 1:30 pm Nicole Baptist will debut her first documentary Trapped By My Own Tears. The confessional style documentary details Nicole Baptist's  journey through an  abusive relationship over the course of several years and her new start as a survivor. The documentary will be featured on the following websites Breath of Life Daily, Ms. Nix In The Mix, and Peace Be Still Massage and Wellness on Nicole's birthday as she celebrates her spiritual rebirth from her journey. The documentary was filmed by Nicole Baptist and directed, edited, and written by C.B. Fletcher.  I had the pleasure of interviewing Nicole before the debut and she happily explained her reasons why revealing this part of her painful past has been therapeutic and is a beacon of hope for other victims and survivors.

Carmen: How do you feel now that you have publicly opened up about your abusive past?
Nicole: Honestly, I am very grateful to have been given an opportunity to share what happened to me. There are so many women who suffer in silence, they are scared to tell people the truth about what goes on behind closed doors – even though their body may show obvious signs of physical abuse; the way they carry themselves cannot mask the pain of the emotional and mental erosion from day to day attacks from their abuser. I survived but there are many women who are in jail or the grave because they were unable to find the strength to make the changes needed to escape the cycle of abuse in their life.
Carmen: Do you regret going through the experience of an abusive relationship or talking about it?
Nicole: While I do have some regrets – the time lost with my family and friends, the years I spent allow me to be mentally, physically and emotionally broken, the lack of self-love and self-worth which aided me in staying stuck in a continuous cycle of destructive behavior in my destructive lifestyle. However, I learned a lot of lessons –about myself and about my partner. I know, going forward, to listen to what a potential mate says and watch their actions. I will never again disregard one of God’s most beautiful gifts to women –our intuition, this natural, hard-wired present from the Father provides instinctive warning signs of danger and I will always pay attention to my inner voice.
Carmen: What was biggest hesitation, if any, in doing this?
Nicole: The impact this revelation would have on my sons. I did not mention some specific information for their protection. My sons are my world and I do not want society to ostracize them in anyway because of my experiences. They are young and have gone through enough. When I spoke to my oldest son, he told me he was proud of me and I need to tell my story. He said, “Mom, you might save the life of another woman. No one should have to go through what you have been through other women need to know how to survive. You’re a survivor mom.” I struggled with my decision but his words made me push forward with exposing my story.
Carmen: Have there been any further aspirations now that you have talked about your abuse, like counseling others or becoming an inspirational speaker?
Nicole: All my life I have been counseling others – family, friends, associates, and people that I meet during my day-to-day activities. Initially, I used them to help me heal my own pain. I had to share some things I had gone through to allow them to see how to make changes in their lives, how to move forward and work through their own pain. I didn’t realize, at the time, my healing was also their strength, my pain gave them passion and drive to pick up the broken pieces of their own lives – the conversations were exchanges of encouragement and support for me and those who requested my advice.
Carmen: Do you have any fears about your life moving forward?
Nicole: No, at this point in my life I have taken a stance – I refuse to be a victim and allow myself to go through any abuse by anyone. I love myself enough to know I deserve better than to succumb to the destructive cycle of abuse ever again. Not only do I take this position with my current partner but with anyone. I love myself to guard my mind, body and soul from the harm any person wants to inflict on me and I do not and will not stand for any emotional, physical, mental, spiritual or financial abuse others my try to impose on me – my self-esteem and self-worth just will not allow it.

Carmen: Do you have any final statements  before your documentary debuts?
Nicole: When you see me understand you have seen a woman who was beaten down, literally and figuratively. I want to especially thank my friends ‘T’ and ‘KC’ who truly carried me through this and inspired me. When the closest people to me discovered the truth- you never said those irritatingly painful words, “Why don’t you just leave?” You understood the complexity of the situation, the emotions behind the my decision, the vulnerability, the weakness, the emptiness and how to transform all those negatives into the positives needed to make the choice to live instead of slowly dying. God brought you in when I needed you most and you both had the right ammunition. I will never forget you or what you did for me and how you stayed with me through it all.  God, thank you, for life – thank you for never turning your back on me and being there in many darkest hours. I am a survivor of abuse – I died, shedding the negativity and destructive behavior and now I am reborn and by the grace of God – I can now live.

Nicole Baptist has chosen not to be a victim and stands before God and the world as a stronger friend, mother, and survivor.

Be sure to tune into Breath Of Life Daily on April 4th for the premier of

Weeping in the "Knight", Joy in the Morning

There's a scene in The Dark Knight Rises that really gets to me. I mean, when I watched it last summer, I was bawling in the theatre. And no, it had nothing to do with the sheer creepiness of Tom Hardy's Bane's voice, which I wholeheartedly believe, is exactly how Satan sounds- at least in my nightmares. Anyway, the scene to which I refer is the one with beaten, back still healing Bruce Wayne attempts to escape his underground imprisonment. In order to gain his freedom, he must some how scale a ridiculously high, circular enclosure. Many, many other prisoners have tried but failed. And fell, to their painful deaths. Yet, our superhero takes up the challenge. He. Must.

So if you're wondering why the heck I'd get all teary over that, let me just tell you, I am a huge Batman fan. What really got me, though, is how I've had that feeling so many times. The feeling that I had to move forward but in order to do so, I couldn't just step, but I would have to take a leap in faith.

Interestingly, prior to Bruce's success, the only other prisoner to have escaped was a young child. Not the big branwy guys, but a little kid. This makes me think of various Scripture verses which admonishes believers to obtain child-like faith.

"Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.”
 Luke 18:17

"And said, 'Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.'"
Matthew 18:3

"But Jesus said, 'Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.'”
Matthew 19:14

There are times, especially in dealing with CIDP, I feel just as broken as Bruce's back. I feel there is no way I can make it. I should resign myself to darkness. Yet, God beckons me to follow Him, up and out, to become "like a child" and trust Him as I prepare to climb and leap. Oh, and of course, just as Bruce did in the above clip, to make sure to throw a lifeline, a guide, to help others in their ascent. It's important to remember, "Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning." (Psalm 30:5b)
